Habitats for Communal Living
Nick Jordan, 2026
Painted recycled aluminium birdhouses on steel poles.
Installation: Maindee, Newport, Wales
Habitats for Communal Living is a permanent public art commission for Greening Maindee, an urban regeneration project transforming outdoor spaces for people and wildlife. Made by artist Nick Jordan, these 72 purple martin nesting boxes were imported from the USA, individually painted and assembled onto steel poles.
Purple martins are unique to North America, but here these dwellings should attract fellow cavity-nesting species such as swifts and starlings, their European cousins. With UK numbers declining by over 80%, swifts and starlings are on the Red List of conservation concern, and rely heavily on human-provided, high structures for nesting.
Artwork originally commissioned by LOCWS International for Art Across the City, Swansea. |
